Who could pass up an opportunity to visit Tupelo, the birthplace and childhood home of Elvis Presley? I had already been to Graceland in Memphis several years ago, so why not go to Tupelo?
Tupelo just happened to be on my route to Birmingham, so I got off the highway and headed into town, following the signs to the location where Elvis’ childhood home sits with a little church and a little museum to honor the King of Rock and Roll.
It’s a quirky little compound, nestled on a little hillside not far from the highway.
I wasn’t much into Elvis music until the movie “Lilo and Stitch” came out. My kids loved the movie, and the music, so we began listening to Elvis, and watching his movies. I have grown to appreciate him a lot more now than I did when I was younger.
My favorite is one of his later hits. “In the Ghetto” is so sad, yet so compelling. Written by Mac Davis, it has been sung by many, but Elvis’ version is by far the best.
